Juan Correa de Vivar was a painter at the Spanish court during the XVIth century ; between 1533-35, he painted the portrait of four Ancien Testament's prophets. Their names, traditional Jewish ones, are written on the phylacteries (typical banners seen in Spanish Baroque pieces of art) floating above their head. At this time, really wearing a Jewish name was obviously forbidden : marranos, who were practicing judaïsm in secret, had taken catholic names and surnames. But they were passing them on to their descendants in a special way (from an oncle to his nephew, from an aunt to her niece and not from a father to his son) which would help them identify other people as members of the same community, and would keep them away from the Inquisitorial authorities. The names which are engraved on these paper banners are those of two marranos families living at the time.
